On Sundays, when townspeople left the narrow streets of the market town and ventured into the forest, they found themselves surrounded by freedom — perhaps the inspiration for its name. Here, the forest ranger served beer, water, coffee, and traditional Danish pastry.

The forest ranger became so busy that, in 1903, the Marselis Committee felt compelled to inform the city council that he was acting more as a restaurateur than a ranger. The council agreed and granted permission for the young restaurateur Hans Rising to take over the responsibility of serving guests.

In just two months, he built a pavilion in a clearing in the forest, which he named “Friheden” — meaning “The Freedom.” On July 31, 1904, Restaurant Terrassen was inaugurated. The restaurant is now a listed historic building and remains almost unchanged since its opening in 1904.

Tivoli Friheden is located in the southern part of Aarhus C.

Arriving from the South – Highway E45

Take exit 50 and follow the signs towards Aarhus S. At the first traffic light, continue straight towards Centrum. Continue along Åhavevej, then take Marselis Boulevard and turn right onto Stadion Allé. You will find Tivoli Friheden at the corner of Stadion Allé and Skovbrynet.

Arriving from the North – Highway E45

Take exit 46 Aarhus N and follow the signs towards Aarhus C. Turn right onto Søndre Ringgade and continue until you reach Marselis Boulevard. Then drive up Stadion Allé. Tivoli Friheden is located at the corner of Stadion Allé and Skovbrynet.

Arriving from Tirstrup / Aarhus Airport
Follow Highway 15 towards Aarhus. Continue through the city along the coast towards Tangkrogen. At Tangkrogen, turn right up Skovbrynet and follow the signs to Tivoli Friheden.

Arriving from the Harbour
From the harbour, turn left onto Kystvejen and continue straight — the road becomes Strandvejen — towards Moesgård. At Tangkrogen, turn right up Skovbrynet and follow the signs.

From Aarhus Central Station
