ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art stands large and monumental in the man-made landscape of Køge Bay Beach Park, south of Copenhagen. ARKEN houses one of Scandinavia’s finest collections of contemporary art, and the museum’s maritime architecture — with its pointed bow majestically jutting out into the terrain — has gained recognition both in Denmark and abroad.
ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated on March 15, 1996, by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, and is one of Denmark’s newest art museums. The opening was preceded by several years of political efforts to make the area south of Copenhagen an important part of Danish cultural life.
